2021
Shanghai received the “Learning City Award” from UNESCO for the first time in 2021, and is the only city in China to win the award that year. This information was recorded in the 2022 Shanghai Municipal Government Work Report. The Shanghai Municipal Education Commission issued a special letter of appreciation to commend SMILE for its great contribution.
2020
SMILE assisted in the establishment of two new professional institutions, namely, the Shanghai Lifelong Education Teacher Training Base and the Shanghai Senior Citizen Education Curriculum Research and Evaluation Guidance Center, and served as the academic support unit for the operation of the Shanghai Senior Citizen Education Curriculum Research and Evaluation Guidance Center.
2019
SMILE has gathered research strengths and provided professional support to facilitate Shanghai successfully joining the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC).

Internationally renowned scholars on lifelong education such as Katarina Popovic, Secretary General of International Council for Adult Education (ICAE), Henning Olesen, Professor of the Faculty of Human and Technology, Roskilde University, Denmark, Raafat Radwan, Former Director of the Department of Adult Education, Ministry of Education of Egypt, Soong HeeHan, Professor of the Seoul National University, South Korea, and Maurice Nkusi, Acting Director of the Teaching and Learning Department, Namibia University of Science and Technology, visited SMILE, substantially promoting high-level and in-depth international dialogue on Shanghai’s lifelong education research results.
