Climate Change Education Forum

On April 26, 2024, the Shanghai Municipal Institutue for Lifelong Education in East China Normal University (ECNU), the Institute of Schooling Reform and Development of ECNU, the Training Center for Secondary School Principals of the Ministry of Education, the Shanghai Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Center Co. Ltd, the Shanghai Green Light Year, the National Alliance for Climate Change Education and Research, and the People's Government of Qibao Town, Minhang District, Shanghai, co-organized, and supported by Shanghai Climate Week, hosted The "Climate Change Education Forum" at ECNU. The forum attracted more than one hundred experts and scholars in various education fields across China, representatives of enterprises and social organizations concerned about climate change, and media representatives.


Opening Remarks

Vice President Dai Liyi of ECNU emphasized the key role of education in responding to global climate change, outlined the contributions and achievements of Shanghai as well as ECNU in the field of climate change education, and looked forward to exploring the theories and bringing together innovations through the forum, demonstrating the sense of responsibility of educators from a great nation.

Mr. Li Zhengtao, Vice President of the Chinese Society of Education, said that the education system should integrate campus and social resources and integrate climate change education into school education and life practices. He emphasized that climate change education is a lifelong process and called on educators to take the forum as an opportunity to jointly promote climate change education and contribute to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mr. Zou Rong, Director of the Executive Committee of the Shanghai Climate Week, pointed out that the forum brought together people from all walks of life who are concerned about climate change education, highlighting the power and wisdom of climate education and its importance. He indicated that the successful organization of the Shanghai Climate Week embodies the concept of "China Acts, Asia Speaks, World Standards" and promotes the future of green development.


Thematic Reports

Dr. Shi Gendong, Executive Director of UNESCO China's Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Program Office, gave an in-depth review and forward-looking outlook on ecological civilization and ESD, emphasized the core position of knowledge innovation in the development of climate change education and the importance of educational innovation based on China's local needs, and put forward the six dimensions of building an ecological civilization and education for sustainable development. Finally, he called on people from all walks of life to work together to build a high-quality platform to promote the in-depth development of education for ecological civilization and sustainable development.

Zhu Zhenxu, Director of the Education Office of the Mission and Education Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Prof. Zhou Limin of the School of Geographic Sciences of ECNU, Associate Prof. Fuji Yishu of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences of Beijing Normal University, and Ms. Ni Huan, Founder and Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Green Lightyear, shared their research and achievements in their respective fields.


Experience Sharing

Twenty-six representatives from Shanghai, Beijing, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shandong made 18 keynote speeches, presenting high-quality research results and demonstrating the rich state of practice and innovation in various places.


Expert Commentary

Mr. Zhang Yong, Director of the Department of Environmental Sciences at ECNU, first acknowledged the sharing of all the speakers at the forum and expressed his gratitude to all the participants for their work and dedication in the field of sustainable development and climate change education. Secondly, he discussed the science of climate change education. Mr. Chen Ming, editor of China Education News, gave a professional review of the forum from the perspective of the media, identifying two "valuable" points and looking forward to the future.


Publication of Results

Gu Huifen, Principal of the School of the Rotating Chair of the National Climate Change Education Research Alliance, announced the launch of the development of the Guidebook on Climate Change Education. Yang Zhiping, editor of the journal New Curriculum Review, announced the results of the national call for typical cases of climate change education and the launch of the development of China's Actions on Climate Change Education (first series).
