Introduction to the Alliance:
On March 1, 2024, the National Research Alliance on Climate Change Education, a civil organization initiated by the Shanghai Municipal Institute for Lifelong Education of East China Normal University and joined by 19 units from Jiangsu, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shandong, Shanghai and Tianjin, was formally established. The alliance links relevant scientific research institutes, universities, high schools, senior high schools and primary schools, so as enterprises, institutions and social organizations, and is fully committed to the practical exploration and theoretical innovation of climate change education that is suitable for China and contributes to global development; upholding the pursuit of lifelong learning for all people, it has formed an educational pattern that pays attention to the whole age range from primary and secondary school students to students of senior universities through collaboration in schools, families and society.
On September 15, 2023, at the national on-site meeting of "Research on Students' Summer Vacation Life and Reconstruction of Life at the Beginning of the Semester" held in Changzhou with the theme of "Collaboration, Empowerment, and Creation", research cases of some of the alliance-initiating schools were presented for the first time to the peers across the country.
On December 12, 2023, the "First Seminar on Climate Change Education through Collaboration in Schools, Families and Society" was held at Qibao Mingqiang Primary School in Minhang District, Shanghai, which was jointly organized by the Shanghai Municipal Institute for Lifelong Education and other organizations, with participants from all over the country. A new pattern of synergy was formed, especially in cooperation with the local town government and the district meteorological bureau.
On March 1, 2024, the "Second Seminar on Climate Change Education through Collaboration in Schools, Families and Society" was held at Longhutang Experimental Primary School in Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province. The conference gathered more forces from government departments, research institutes and academic institutions, especially under the guidance of experts from the Publicity and Education Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and
with the accumulation of experience from a large number of enterprises, it enriched the content of the study and formed the basic structure of the study. The National Research Alliance on Climate Change Education was also established at the conference.
On April 26, 2024, the "2024 Shanghai Climate Week Climate Change Education Forum" was held at East China Normal University. More abundant case results were exchanged, the pattern of multi-sectoral and multi-principal cooperation was further stabilized, and the development paradigm of lifelong learning for all people, from children to the elderly, and the close interaction between theory and practice was further clarified.
In mid-May 2024, the Shanghai Municipal Institute for Lifelong Education formally submitted a letter of intent to establish a "Climate Change Education Laboratory of East China Normal University" based on the practices of the alliance. The establishment of this education laboratory is dedicated to promoting the innovation of climate change education models that fit China's national context.
In November 2024, the "Third Seminar on Climate Change Education through Collaboration in Schools, Families and Society" was held at the Qianjing Primary School in Shanghai, focusing on "School-Enterprise Collaboration".
In March 2025, the "Forth Seminar on Climate Change Education through Collaboration in Schools, Families and Society" will be held in Foshan, Shenzhen, focusing on the application of the "Whole Organization Approach".
Since the establishment of the Alliance, the team has been growing, the research system has been improving, the themes and paths of practice have been breaking through, and certain achievements have been made, generating influence at home and abroad: a series of Guiding Principles on Climate Change Education has been researched and developed, including the General Outline, the School-Enterprise Cooperation Edition, and the Elderly Education Edition, etc.; The First Series of China's Actions on Climate Change Education (Chinese and English Bilingual Editions) was published, and more than ten articles of theoretical theories and practical cases have been published in the relevant journals; the achievements have also been shared globally through the UNESCO website and international forums.
The Alliance will continue to build up a cooperative community with the power of integration and creativity, tap the synergy of families, schools and society, and further create a powerful and ubiquitous learning field, so that climate change education can present a stronger synergy, a more efficient and more beautiful answer. As the students say: start small and heading for greatness!
